According to a Reuters report, the PTI spokesperson confirmed Aleema Khan’s arrest. The development comes days before the party’s planned major protest demanding the release of Imran Khan, the party’s founder and former prime minister.
Imran Khan has been in jail since August 2023. His release remains PTI’s central demand, with the party preparing to mobilise supporters across the country for demonstrations.
Police have said that several activists have been detained ahead of the planned protest. Four PTI workers and activists had also been detained earlier. The party has alleged that the government is picking up its leaders and workers in advance in an effort to weaken the planned demonstrations.
Islamabad police have also stepped up security preparations ahead of the expected protest in the capital. According to Dawn, an important meeting was held at the Central Police Office, attended by police and administrative officials. The meeting reviewed the security situation and discussed a plan to prevent any violence or disorder.
Police are monitoring not only the roads but also preparations linked to the protest. Authorities are gathering information about the party’s preparations, the movements of its leaders and the activities of its workers.
Surveillance has also been increased at guest houses, inns and bus terminals across the capital. Intelligence gathering has been intensified, with police monitoring people who could arrange food, water, accommodation or vehicles for protesters.
Police units responsible for these areas have reportedly been instructed to keep a close watch on contractors and other individuals who may provide assistance to protesters. The Special Branch and Counter Terrorism Department, along with intelligence agencies, have also been placed on alert.
PTI has said the protest is aimed at securing Imran Khan’s release and has called on party workers from different cities to travel to Islamabad. The government and police have so far maintained a strict approach, with authorities preparing to control any large gathering.
The arrest of Aleema Khan is expected to further increase tensions within the party as preparations for the September 27 protest continue, keeping police and administrative authorities on heightened alert.
